The Dark side of Montenegro
Montenegro, credit: unknown
Last time you heard from me I told you about some of the good things Montenegro. Now it’s time I tell you about the downside or the bad things if you will.
Communist History of Montenegro
From 1945-1992 Montenegro was under the rule of a communist dictatorship known as “The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.” Before this, Montenegro’s history of being conquered continued, during world war 2 it was first occupied by Italy, and by 1943 it was then occupied by Nazi Germany. This then led to a communist revolution that ousted the Germans in 1945. And then like every Communist government before them, they launched their own genocide against Non-communists, leading thousands of people to be massacred. Yugoslavia then collapsed and in 1992 Montenegro became part of Serbia before finally gaining their independence in 2006. https://communistcrimes.org/en/countries/montenegro
Because of this history, Montenegro still faces many problems that can commonly be found within the Baltic region. Despite the strides they have made to overcome this past, there are still scars that can be seen. One of the more obvious ones is the country’s electrical grid. It has been reported that daily power outages are almost a daily occurrence.
It’s Expensive
This will be a fairly short section. However, according to many travelers, Montenegro is an expensive country, especially when considering Europe is already an expensive destination. I find that many people are reporting that the accommodations simply aren’t worth the price you’ll pay. Montenegro is often compared to Croatia with many people saying, “The prices are similar to Croatia but the quality isn’t there. At least in Croatia, you feel that you’re getting your money’s worth.” You can use this link to estimate how much you’ll spend https://www.budgetyourtrip.com/montenegro
In Conclusion
Based on my findings, crime isn’t something to worry about so much in this country. The issues tend to be more of the lasting effects of communism, and how pricy things can be. Overall the country has a pretty low crime rate, but they do see a rise in petty crimes during tourist season. That’s a trend you’ll see across the entire world though. To lessen your risk of facing a crime just avoid public transportation and you should be fine. https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/montenegro
Thank you for joining me today and remember, be safe and don’t be stupid in all of your travels. Being stupid will get you in far more trouble than anything else.
