Italy: How Much Does it Cost?

Venice, Italy. Credit: Unknown

We’ve talked about the history, and we’ve talked about different excursions, now it’s time to talk about how much a visit here actually costs. As usual, I will provide a comprehensive breakdown to give you an idea of whether you can afford it. So without any further ado, let’s get into it.

Flights

As usual, I will give you a price range for each economy, business, and first-class. I will be using the prices of JFK and LAX to come up with this price range. Unlike Jamaica though, if you’re flying out of the US you should prepare for a long flight.

Economy

Price Range: $450-$800. There was an outlier of $6,000 since that price was so much higher than any other listed I have chosen to exclude it from the price range. And keep in mind, since these will be longer flights, you may want to put the largest part of your budget towards a better class.

Business

Price Range: $2,000-$5,000. Again there was another outlier of $11,000 that I’ve chosen to exclude, because why would you pick that ticket if you can get the same ticket for $2,000? Even if you have to fly to a different airport in Italy, the 11,000 doesn’t make any sense.

First-Class

Price Range: $4,500-$10,500 There was another outlier of $25,000 just do yourself a favor and don’t pick that. There’s no reason to. And since there is a bit of overlap between Business and first class, it might just be worth going with first class if it works with your budget.

Hotel

Much like flights, I will also give you a price range for budget, mid-range, and luxury hotels. And don’t worry there are a few all-inclusive options. The real question is, are they worth the extra costs?

Budget

Price Range: $50-$75

Recommendation: Pisa Tower Plaza

This is a simple hotel located in the city of Pisa. It has all of the basic hotel amenities, and costs just $59 per night. The rooms are nice but simple. The biggest downside is that breakfast isn’t included, and costs an additional $13 per day.

Mid-range

Price Range: $75-$200

Recommendation: Excelsior Palace Portofino Coast.

It is hard to find a hotel with better views than this one. Located in the city of Rapallo, there is plenty to see and do here, like visiting Rapallo Castle. This hotel also has the basic amenities and incredibly nice rooms at the reasonable price of $103 per night. Breakfast is also included, but they don’t offer an all-inclusive package.

Luxury

Price Range: $250-$1,000

Recommendation: Tui Magic Life Calabria

For $930 per night, you can stay here. It comes with an all-inclusive package for no extra, 5 restaurants on the property, the normal hotel amenities, and you get a private lodge to stay in. On the property, you can also do yoga, and archery, take a break in the steam room, go down the waterslides, and much more.

Excursions

Italy is a place with a ton of tours to choose from. And these are tours you’ll want to do, like visiting the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and so much more. There are also plenty of adventurous things to do, like Skiing. For more suggestions, check out our Newsletter on things to do in Italy. But you should budget about $200 per day. The average tour should cost quite a bit less than that, but this will give you enough wiggle room to do adventurous things too.

Food.

The average cost of a meal in Italy is about $22 per person. But you might want to budget more than that so you can enjoy some of the fancy restaurants Italy has to offer. Maybe plan on $50 per meal.

Total Costs.

Now, to give you the total price range so you can know if you can come to Italy. Keep in mind this price range is for a 1-week trip for 1 person. If you’re not a solo traveler, just multiply the numbers by the number of guests.

For a trip to Italy, you should budget anywhere from $2,750-$20,000. As you can see you can either have a very cheap trip to Italy, or an expensive one, depending on your style of travel.

In Conclusion.
