Mozambique: What are the Costs?
Mozambique. Credit: Unknown
I’m going to warn you right off the bat. This might be the most expensive place we’ve discussed. As far as flights go, this is not a budget-friendly place. So with that said, let’s talk about it.
Flights
As usual I will give you a price range for Economy, business, and First. I will also tell you the prices out of LAX and JFK to help you set up a budget.
Economy
We’re starting today out with high prices, the cheapest out of LAX and JFK is the same cost at $1,100, but this section has a massive range with the highest prices coming in at $15,000. Because of this, you should really search for a cheap deal, or just search for seats in a higher class.
Business
There is quite a bit of overlap between Economy and Business when it comes to price range. the cheapest is again the same for both JFK and LAX, coming in at $5,000. This also has a massive price range, with the most expensive coming in at $20,500.
First
Once again, we have a bit of overlap, but this price range is much smaller than the others. The cheapest is out of JFK at just over $16,000. At LAX you won’t find a flight for cheaper than $20,00, the most expensive comes in at $24,000. As you can see there’s a lot of overlap in all of the prices, so look for the best deal in the highest class that works for your budget. It’s going to be a long flight.
Hotels
Like last time I will give you a price range for budget hotels, mid-range, and luxury, with a few recommendations for each.
Budget
Price range: $9- $40 Once again, please don’t go for the cheapest option. Keep your safety in mind.

This is the only one I can kind of feel comfortable recommending. This “three-star” hotel comes in at $36 per night, but wifi is $4 extra.
Mid-Range
Price range $50-$120
The Matola Hotel. Credit: Unknown
This hotel takes a bit of a step up from the others while still having a cheap price. The cheapest room comes in at $67, with other larger rooms that range up to $142 per night.
VIP Grand Maputo. Credit: Unknown
This is easily the nicest hotel of the mid-range hotels, and it has the most amenities, with free wifi, restaurants on sight, and a large pool. This could be the best option for your travel if you don’t want to spend too much. The only room price I can find comes in at $92 a night.
Luxury.
Price range: $300- $12,000
No that’s not a typo, I will show you the one that is $12,000 a night, and I’m telling you it’s not worth it.
Casa Surf Lodge
Coming in at $12,123 a night, this place is marketed as a surf lodge. Based on the listing it seems that it is a private residence you are renting for the time. It says you will have the entire home to yourself, but the place only sleeps 12, according to their listing. So you’re still spending $1,000 per night, assuming everyone chips in. And you’re not getting nice rooms. You can get far better for far cheaper than this. This is not a recommendation, this is a warning.

This all-inclusive resort has many different Villas to choose from. However, prices do start at $1,500 per night. Even still that is so much better than the place above. Plus the all-inclusive is included in the base price. There are restaurants on sight, and there are beautiful beaches to visit all around. If you want to splurge, this is by far your best option.
Excursions.
Because I did a whole newsletter on things to do, I’m going to keep this short. and just give you a basic price range. Now naturally more adventurous things like surfing, and safari trips are going to be more expensive. But we also know there are cheap things to do like swimming with Whale Sharks. Because of the wide variety of choices you should budget $20-$300 per day. If you pick a nice middle point in that price range you should be able to afford just about anything you want to do.
Food
The food here is very cheap. You can budget as little as $30 per day, per person that is if you want to be on the safe side and splurge a bit. But if you get an all-inclusive option you can budget even less.
Total Cost
So the total cost you can expect to spend, for a week-long trip as a solo traveler is a price range of $1,650- $37,000. I purposely didn’t include the $ 12,000-a-night hotel in my calculations because you’re stupid if you book that.
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed our journey through Mozambique. As you can see a trip here can get pricey pretty quickly, especially if you make bad choices.
